I was born there.
I lived there for half of my childhood when I stayed with my dad.
It's where I've been a police officer for fifteen years.
So why don't I live in the Big City proper anymore?
For many reasons. Here's one:
One day, when I had been on the job for about two or three years, I ran in to the local grocery store chain to get a few items. When I turned a corner to go down an aisle, I came face to face with a suspect we had arrested two weeks prior.
Not just any suspect, a 6'2, 280 pound He Man. He had a felony warrant for Aggravated Assault. When we went to go arrest him, the fight was on. At one point, one officer was on his back, one (me) was trying to take him out at the knees, and another was using his mace. It ended when all three of us and the suspect went crashing through the coffee table, shattering it into a million little wooden pieces. Somehow, once on the floor, we managed to double cuff him and get him under control. Once out to the squad, he was ticked. He kicked at our squad car doors, spit all over the back seat, and even struggled with us as we brought him in to jail.
So here I was, middle of the grocery store, face to face with this He Man that had gone a couple rounds with us. And guess what I was wearing???
Shorts, flowery tank top, flip flops, and a tiny purse barely big enough to hold my check book. (It was July.)
Needless to say, it was quite obvious I was not carrying my handgun. Heck, I wasn't even carrying my mace. Nothing.
"Oh Sh--" was what went through my mind. But I stayed calm, acted like I didn't recognize him, and boogied down the aisle as quick as I could. In my mind, I was thinking, "How the heck did he get out so quick?"
As soon as I was out of sight, I ditched my grocery cart and took the fastest route to the front door. I kept an eye behind me to see if he was following, but he didn't. Once I was out to my car, I took the farthest exit out of the parking lot and kept an eye on my rear view mirror. Luckily, no cars followed me out.
Now, would he have really tried to do something? Probably not. However, as cops, we need to always have the upper hand. It's how we survive. This was the first of many incidents that convinced me that living in the Big City where I worked was probably not a good idea.

Wow, that sounds scary. I could feel my heart beat faster as I read. I come from a really small town in West Texas where you would have to deal with the same sort of thing. It's a good thing you decided to move out of the Big City!
Cool and calm under pressure :)
Sounds like he didn't even recognize you. That happens sometimes when you're out of uniform. They can look right at you and not put 2 and 2 together.
How does that old saying go...."he who turns and walks away, lives to fight another day". Especially when you're in flip flops in a supermarket :)
Wow! Thank goodness he didnt follow you and it was probably a good idea to move out of the city like you did!
He probably didn't recognize you. I don't know what you look like, but from the outfit you described, I bet you are a hottie. No giant guy like that is going to associate a hottie with one of the people that took him out. You have been trained to remember faces, most people haven't. Especially if he got maced, your face is probably a blur to him. Glad to hear nothing happened. That is scary to me and I wasn't there. I bet you could have kicked his butt, though. ;-)
holy crap, i guess if it got ugly you could have thrown cans of spam at his head as you flip flopped your way to safety...i see why you do not live in the city. i thought my job followed me home, but you definitely have me beat in this category.
Wow--I've never even thought of that aspect of your job. I don't blame you for moving!
Sounds to me like you are BRILLIANT!! I couldnt agree with your choice more! I know as a cop you dont have 'fears' like I do, but that would have SCARED ME TO DEATH!
Blessings!
Amanda
My daughter sort of has the same problem. Some of her clients in the past became to fond of her or needy...obsessive maybe I should say and didn't want her to leave the area. She now takes certain precautions...like unlisted phone numbers and other things. You have to be careful in this big- often mean world.
I don't know how you do it! I so admire you. :0)
Oh wow, that sounds scary! I would have high tailed it out of there too. Glad nothing went down there.
How scary!!!
I bet he didn't even reconize you, but I am sure on your end that scared the crap out of you, and made you think of all the possibilities...
Smart, not to live in the big city. Especially with the little ones now.
Hope you have a Merry Christmas!!! This month has been a blur! Sorry I haven't been keeping up:(
@ Becky - I know, the kids are another reason why I would never move back in. Oh, and don't worry about keeping up, it's Christmas!
wow,and it happens, thats why there are certain places we don't go to cause you never know who you may run into!
MERRY CHRISTMAS
Wow, that sounds liike a scary situation. If I were a cop I wouldn't live in the city where I worked either.
We've had that. We've left restaurants without eating and grocery stores without purchasing. We do live in the same town that he works in, but don't go several places. We are looking for houses out in the county to get out a bit, but the down side is I won't have all "the guys" driving by our house 24/7 checking on us.
I was nervous as I read your post!!!! I thought for sure he'd recognize you!!!!
holy cow. i laughed at the flip flop, tiny purse, flowery top but it's not so funny.
glad you are safe. :)
